About:
Kent Wildlife Trust
Founded in 1958, we are a registered charity (number 239992) and the leading conservation organisation covering the whole of Kent and Medway and dedicated to protecting wildlife and their habitats for everyone to enjoy. One of 47 Wildlife Trusts across the UK, we are a membership organisation with over 30,000 members who care about Kent’s wildlife and support our activities. Together, we create a united voice to speak out on issues that affect our wildlife.
Saving. Our Reserves Team takes care of 61 strategically important nature reserves covering some 3,000 hectares of land. Each reserve is a special place for wildlife. Staff and volunteers work tirelessly year-round to ensure that these precious sites are maintained.
Influencing. Halting the degradation of our countryside outside our nature reserves is one of the most important challenges we face. Our Conservation Team defends Kent and Medway’s threatened wildlife by working closely with national bodies, local authorities and landowners. We comment on over 300 planning applications each year, making sure that wildlife is considered when development is planned and we make special efforts to save Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) species and habitats from dying out.
Inspiring. Our People and Wildlife Team reaches out to children and adults across the county, sharing wildlife knowledge through exciting activities in schools and at our five visitor centres and nature reserves. Each year we introduce over 12,000 children to the wonders of wildlife and involve many hundreds of adults in the wildlife and natural environment around them.
Empowering. Over 1,000 volunteers support every area of our work, managing nature reserves, carrying out surveying and monitoring, manning our visitor centres, helping out in the offices and running our local supporters groups
